摘要|Abstract

This paper explores the links between export quality, export networks, and skill utilization by developing a monopolistic competition model with heterogeneous firms in international trade. The model shows that export quality not only has a direct positive impact on skill utilization, but also generates an indirect impact through export networks. The relationship between product quality and export networks is inverse U-shape, and larger export networks decrease skill utilization. We test our theoretical model using China Customs Data and the data of Chinese listed firms from 2011 to 2013, and find supportive evidence, which is also robust to different measures of skill utilization. To further examine the channels through which quality-upgrading affecting export networks, we first decompose export networks into high-income ones and low-income ones to distinguish the impact of income heterogeneity on product quality. We then move on to identify which of the two factors, i.e. transportation distance versus language distance, plays a key role in influencing the changes in export networks. We find that the channel is mainly the tradeoff between higher quality valuation from quality upgrading and higher iceberg cost from longer transportation distance.
