主讲人简介:

崔静波:2004年毕业于华中科技大学,获得经济学、数学学士学位;2007年毕业于武汉大学经济与管理学院,获得经济学硕士学位;2012年毕业于美国爱荷华州立大学(Iowa State University)经济系,获得博士学位;2012年7月-2013年6月在爱荷华州立大学经济系CARD研究中心担任博士后;2014年7月-9月担任爱荷华州立大学CARD研究中心访问助理教授。研究成果已发表在农业与资源经济学领域国际顶级期刊American Journal of Agricultural Economics(2篇)。

研究方向:环境经济学、国际贸易、能源经济学

Jingbo CUI: Assistant Professor, Economics and Management School of Wuhan University. Professor Cui obtained his PhD degree from Iowa State University in 2012 and did postdoctoral research at CARD research center of Department of Economics from July 2012 to June 2013. He then served as visiting assistant professor there from July to Sep. 2014.   Two of his papers have been published in American Journal of Agricultural Economics, which is one of the top journals in fields of Agricultural and Resource Economics

内容提要(Abstract):

This paper examines the role of firm structure in determining plant shutdown decisions, with an emphasis on environmental regulations. Using the unique plant-level data with environmental interest in the U.S. manufacturing industry over the period of 1990-2008, we find evidence that, in response to stringent environmental regulations, multi-plant firms have greater flexibility in adjusting their production than single plants firms by raising the likelihood of shutting down their affiliated plants located in regulated counties. Moreover, we measure the headquarters network effect at the national, local and neighborhood levels, defined by the number of affiliated plants clustered in different levels of areas. Their effects on plant closure decisions for subsidiaries vary with the level of network. We further decompose the neighborhood network into those in regulated and unregulated neighborhood counties, and examine how these network measures affect closure decisions of plants affiliated with multi-plant firms. Along this line, the effects of plant attributes and county characteristics on plant death are explored.
