摘要｜Abstract
We examine the impact of the rules of origin (RoO) on U.S. manufacturing employment. Exploiting cross-market variations in the RoO exposure from the NAFTA, we find that U.S. commuting zones more exposed to the RoO experience significant increases in the manufacturing employment share of the working-age population over a decade. The decline in U.S. imports caused by the RoO contributes to the increase in the manufacturing employment share. The RoO led to significant job creation in the Rust Belt region, in the automobile industry, for white-collar workers, males, and the younger generation.
